Breaking: Former Super Eagles Goalkeeper Peter Rufai Passes Away At 61.

The Nigerian football community is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures, Peter Rufai, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper, who has tragically passed away at the age of 61. Reports indicate that Rufai, fondly known as “Dodomayana” for his commanding presence in goal, died on Thursday morning, 3 July 2025, following a prolonged illness.

Peter Rufai was a cornerstone of Nigerian football during the 1990s, a golden era for the Super Eagles. Renowned for his agility, shot-stopping ability, and leadership, Rufai played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s success on the continental and global stage. He represented Nigeria in two FIFA World Cups, 1994 and 1998, and was instrumental in the Super Eagles’ triumph at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His performances earned him widespread admiration, cementing his status as a legend of Nigerian football.

Born on 24 August 1963, Rufai’s career spanned both domestic and international clubs, including stints in Europe with clubs like Lokeren and Beveren in Belgium, and later Farense in Portugal. His professionalism and dedication made him a role model for aspiring goalkeepers across Africa. Rufai’s contributions extended beyond the pitch, as he served as a mentor to younger players and a passionate advocate for the growth of football in Nigeria.

Tributes have poured in from fans, former teammates, and football authorities. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expressed its condolences, describing Rufai as “a titan of Nigerian football whose legacy will forever inspire future generations.” Social media platforms have been flooded with messages of grief and appreciation, with many recalling his heroics in goal during Nigeria’s memorable 1994 World Cup campaign.

Details surrounding Rufai’s passing remain limited, and authorities are yet to release an official statement confirming the cause of death. The football world awaits further information as it comes to terms with this significant loss.

Peter Rufai’s legacy as a Super Eagles legend and a trailblazer for Nigerian goalkeepers will endure. His contributions to the beautiful game in Nigeria and beyond will not be forgotten. He is survived by his family, friends, and a nation of football fans who will forever cherish his memory.

Rest in peace, Dodomayana.
