ASUU-KASU Suspends Strike After Government Intervention.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, has officially suspended its strike following negotiations with the state government.
The decision, announced on Monday by ASUU-KASU chairman Dr Peter Adamu, was taken on Saturday after Governor Uba Sani’s administration demonstrated a commitment to addressing the union’s long-standing demands.
In a previous statement, Kaduna State’s Commissioner for Education, Professor Muhammad Sani Bello, noted that the dispute between ASUU-KASU and the government predated the current administration. However, he emphasised that Governor Sani had taken proactive steps to resolve the issues affecting Kaduna State-owned tertiary institutions.
Dr Adamu commended the governor for his swift intervention, highlighting that the government had released funds to settle 60 per cent of the withheld salaries from September 2017 and payments for the supervision of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) over five sessions.
Additionally, the government agreed to a structured timeline for addressing other outstanding payments, including:
– The five months’ withheld salaries from May to September 2022
– Promotion arrears
– Earned Academic Allowance (EAA)
– Pension remittances from 2009 to 2019
– Death benefits and Group Life Assurance
Dr Adamu acknowledged that the intervention marked a significant departure from previous administrations, where ASUU members were allegedly victimised for participating in lawful industrial action.
With the strike now suspended, academic activities at Kaduna State University are expected to resume, bringing relief to students and staff alike.
