Tinubu Directs NOUN To Transition Into Fully Online University.

President Bola Tinubu has instructed the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to transition into a fully online institution, building on its expertise in open and distance learning to expand access to education across the country.

Speaking during the 14th convocation ceremony of the university held in Abuja at the weekend, President Tinubu, who serves as the Visitor to the institution, was represented by the Director of Universities Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Hajiya Rakiya Ilyasu.

The President emphasised the need for NOUN to fully embrace digital technology, positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s online education space. “The Federal Government, under my leadership, remains committed to supporting education by liberating information technology to enhance learning,” he said.

He noted that as part of efforts to improve digital infrastructure in tertiary institutions, the federal government is financing the installation of fibre optics at NOUN to provide seamless internet access across numerous study centres situated in various geopolitical zones.

“This initiative harnesses the power of technology to improve access to education and foster inclusivity,” Tinubu stated. “A large number of our universities have indeed benefited significantly from various federal interventions, particularly in the areas of physical infrastructure and research grants awarded to staff through institutional-based research.”

President Tinubu charged the institution with the responsibility of spearheading digital learning innovations across Africa, stating that NOUN is well-positioned to confront Nigeria’s educational challenges, especially in rural areas where access to quality education remains limited.

He added that the transformation of NOUN into a fully online university aligns with the broader goals of Nigeria’s education system—to equip citizens with vital skills in technology, science, entrepreneurship, and interpersonal communication that are essential for national development and economic progress.

With this directive, NOUN is expected to maximise its online delivery capacity and serve as a model for inclusive, technology-driven education in Africa.
